Have been travelling around quite a bit lately. Passing through Madurai in Tamil Nadu, enroute to a friend's wedding, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to visit the Meenakshi Temple. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, it's probably the most famous temple in South India. The temple boasts of beautiful architecture and monolith statues, some going as far back as the 12th century. I found this beautiful figurine of a lady with the lamp in one of the mandapams near the Hall of Thousand Pillars. Reminded me of a few lines from H.W. Longfellow's famous poem.
A Lady with a Lamp shall stand
In the great history of the land,
A noble type of good,
Heroic womanhood.
